Opengate Welcomes New CEO, Christopher Laubis!

We are thrilled to welcome the new CEO of Opengate, Christopher Laubis! We also honor the fantastic contributions of outgoing Opengate CEO and Advisor Brian Hulten during his 42 years of service at Opengate, starting as a direct support professional and eventually leading the organization as CEO.

Chris has deep roots in the Opengate community and brings with him a wealth of valuable experience. His first job supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities was in New York City in 1985. Chris then came to Opengate in 1989, where he worked closely for 12 years with our outgoing CEO Brian Hulten. Chris remembers Brian as a mentor and role model, particularly in areas of individual’s rights and protections.

After working at Opengate as a Classroom Teacher, Sheltered Workshop Manager, and Assistant Residential Director, Chris left Opengate in 2001 but remained in the field. He has spent the last 22 years at another agency, first as the Director of Clinical Services and most recently as the Chief Program Officer, during which time he developed a variety of successful and engaging new programs.

Chris is thrilled to be back at Opengate and says:

“I look at it as a homecoming. It was the first organization to offer me a career opportunity instead of just a job. I’ve maintained a bond with Opengate over the years, volunteering on the Informed Consent Committee and catching up with the individuals I once supported, who I see out in the community from time to time. With Brian’s retirement, there was concern that some of Opengate’s essential history could be lost. I’m happy to bring with me an understanding of Opengate’s roots, as well as the tools to establish new partnerships and collaborations that will keep the agency strong long into the future. Most of all, I’m looking forward to being part of a dedicated team that helps every individual who relies on us get the highest quality services and support available to them.”

Message from Outgoing Opengate CEO and Advisor, Brian Hulten:

“It has been an honor, privilege, and joy to serve Opengate for all these years. The individuals we serve mean the world to me. I’m confident the organization is in good hands with its fantastic team, including our outstanding new CEO Christopher Laubis, our dedicated DSPs, and every member of our devoted staff and community. I welcome Chris and look forward to seeing him lead Opengate into the future. I know good things are ahead for Opengate.”

Message from the Opengate Board Chair, Thomas J. Lester, MD:

“The Board of Directors would like to welcome Christopher Laubis as the next CEO of Opengate.  Chris began his career supporting individuals with developmental challenges in 1985 as a direct support professional. He has worked at Opengate as assistant director of residential operations, and for the past 20 years at another organization initially as director of clinical services, and most recently as chief program officer. He returns to Opengate with a wealth of experience, and with the temperament and determination to continue our mission into the future.

The Board would also like to express their gratitude to Brian Hulten. Over the past 42 years, he has put his heart and soul into Opengate, and in service to the individuals under our care. Brian began his career at Opengate as a direct support professional, and after obtaining his LCSW degree, advanced in the organization to become the CEO in 1995. Brian has led Opengate through good times, and challenging times, and has established the culture of respect and caring that defines us today. Our deep appreciation and warmest regards go to Brian as he begins a well-earned retirement.

Please join me and the Board in welcoming Chris, and in wishing Brian well on the next phase of his life’s journey.”
