Brian Hulten, LCSW-R
Former Chief Executive Officer
A tireless advocate for the individuals served at Opengate, Brian was with the agency for over four decades. When he started in 1981, he worked for the agency’s founders—two pioneering, forward-thinking women with family members who were residents—and is committed to keeping their vision alive today. Brian shares,
“It’s the individuals here who are important.
They are the heroes.
They make me braver and stronger.”
Brian began at Opengate as a direct support professional. As a result, many of the residents have known him for as long as 40 years, starting from when he directly supported them every day. They look for him, chat with him, and consider him part of their family.
After a few years, Brian earned his Master of Social Work and became a licensed clinical social worker. While at Opengate, he also had a private practice as a social worker for 15 years. His background as a licensed clinician continues to inform his work, particularly when discussing medications and therapies with the medical team.

Brian was promoted to director of clinical services and then in 1995, he was promoted to CEO by the Board of Directors. As CEO, Brian was a hands-on leader who oversaw every aspect of running a 24/7 agency. He handled state funding, medical issues, responding to individuals’ needs, and more, while fostering a safe, supportive family atmosphere. Because of his longevity, staff members felt safe telling him what was wrong, what was right, and what needed fixing.
Brian is inspired by the individuals served at Opengate, as well as the team that supports them:
“It’s seeing the individuals. That’s why I’m here. It’s knowing we are giving them the best life they can have. And the staff is wonderful. I’m lucky to be a part of it all.”
After his many years of service, Brian acted as an advisor to Opengate before his retirement at the end of 2023.
“It has been an honor, privilege, and joy to serve Opengate for all these years. The individuals we serve mean the world to me. I’m confident the organization is in good hands with its fantastic team, including our outstanding new CEO Christopher Laubis, our dedicated DSPs, and every member of our devoted staff and community. I welcome Chris and look forward to seeing him lead Opengate into the future. I know good things are ahead for Opengate.”
Outside of work, Brian has been an avid runner for over 40 years and enjoys the sense of peace that comes with it.
