Board of Directors member, Ginny Vreeland, became familiar with Opengate while in the position as a nurse employed there from 1981-1985. When it came time to find suitable housing for her son with developmental disabilities, she already knew where the best place for him would be.
When a behavioral incident arises, most agencies immediately place a 911 emergency call to handle the situation. Opengate rarely has the need to call 911, but when we do, the call is a surprise to the department.
Each week some of Opengate’s individuals participate in sorting and packaging surplus medical supplies for the Afya Foundation located in Yonkers, NY. Afya Foundation regularly donates and ships supplies to African countries and badly damaged areas of the world due to natural disasters.
At our annual Awards Day luncheon, Opengate also celebrated our 50th Anniversary with our staff, residents and their families. Each of our individuals was presented a certificate for their achievements.
We have come a long way in the development and acceptance of people with disabilities since Michael was young. Inclusion in communities, employment, volunteer opportunities, and the expansion of their unique skills has created a whole new world that in years past individuals never had the chance to experience. Thanks to top agencies like Opengate, the door is open to improve the quality of life for all.
